On the road to more success

As a kid, she saw herself in a black coat, talking at length, settling disputes and challenges…It was a childhood fancy that Jenny Zeliang had in mind long ago and although this ‘Lawyer Image’ went out of sight as she grew up, it didn’t matter so much because the one-line she associated with the profession- “if you win, you’re the man of the day” has, as a matter of fact made her a winner all the way.

She is one of those rare Nagas who saw possibilities in learning a language that is not associated with Nagaland whatsoever. It was out of her own interest that she did a 3 years Diploma Course in Chinese language from Chinese Cultural University Taipei, Taiwan. She feels that this has given her a good start to her career that began at the India-China Chamber of Commerce & Industry (ICCCI) as an Assistant Director. Here, she says, she plays the role of extending managerial support to the Head of the organisation which includes organising meetings for Chinese officials (Diplomats), Maintaining official PR with Chinese and all Indian officials (Diplomats), Promoting Trade & Exhibition between India-China, Co-ordinating Independently with Chinese and Indian Corporates, Attending and also addressing Seminars & meetings related to India-China Business & Trade. She is also the Head of the Chinese Language Department and takes care of Appointment of Chinese Language faculties, Chinese language course development, collaboration with universities and management institutes across PR of China and India. In between, she travels to China on and off depending on work. Jenny has also been part of Promoting Trade fairs and Exhibitions which includes China Product Show in Mumbai 2008, China Sourcing Fair in Mumbai 2008, India International Fashion Jewellery & Accessories Show in Mumbai 2008, Kunming Fair in China 2008, Canton Fair Guangzhou China 2008-2009. AIESEC and ICCCI joint China-India Youth Entrepreneurship Summit 2008 that was held in Ahmedabad. At present, she is working on a new project on promoting China International Petroleum and petrochemical Equipment & Technology Exhibition in China 2009. All of these successful undertakings in a year’s time since her joining the reputed Organization in February 2008, it is encouraging to see a young and thriving Naga lady excelling in the National Arena. She is among the very few Nagas who speaks, reads and writes like a true Chinese although she is still a Naga at heart. In fact, she says it’s always been one of her dreams to see Nagas start building small companies which will actually employ other Nagas and it’s also one of those plans she wishes to pursue in Nagaland someday. She also expresses that if at all Nagaland University plans to introduce a course in Foreign Language, she is willing to start something on the Chinese Language. Also an ardent believer of a special ability inherent in every individual, she feels that one just have to discover and realize what their dreams are made of. She considers herself fortunate to have had the opportunity to pursue part of her education in Taiwan and says that there, “Youths undertake odd jobs to earn even though their parents are well-off. They are very hard working and youths become independent very early on in life” and this, she believes, inculcates a sense of ‘dignity of labour’ besides enhancing their entrepreneurship skills. But that tone of disappointment surfaces when she says that most Naga parents want their children to do Government jobs, however limited it is in the state. On that note, she feels that enterprising children/youths should be encouraged to do what they believe in no matter how silly it may sound. She believes that their ideas will bear fruit one day. She is someone who sees the Naga Youth as a gifted lot. Only thing, she adds to it is that “if they put in a little more hard work, they can do wonders”. In the meantime, she says that a good many of them Nagas are holding good positions outside and feels that if one has the required qualification, is hardworking and foremost if one has the zeal to follow his/her dreams without even a hint of doubt, nobody can stop that person from achieving what he/she wants. Interestingly, Jenny is also the Entertainment and Health News Editor of Bharat Chronicle, India’s Internet Newspaper. Alongside, she developed www.mydimapur.com, a website dedicated to Dimapurians in particular and Nagas in general, with the aim to have something for everyone from businesses to youth with the view to help them mingle and take part in constructive discussions. In it all, she feels fortunate and grateful for the support she always got from her parents. From that seemingly little dream of winning a day’s case in the court as a girl, she has definitely won arrays of colours in her field and this time, it’s something different- They call it Success and more of it, she’s certainly going to hold in the days to come.
