Graphic Designer Par Excellence

Rokovor Vihienuo is one of the finest Graphic Designers in the state although he never intended to become one early in life. Rather, he ventured out to Mumbai to learn Fine Arts at JJ School of Art but as fate would have it, his dream took a different turn and he ended up taking up a Diploma course in Multimedia at EDIT, Pune, after which he worked as Assistant Graphic Designer at the Digital Spice Studio, Pune for two years. This, he says is where his love for graphic designing also began.

He also insists on having done most of his learning as a Graphic Designer in Pune and although he had ample chances to work with reputed studios in the cities, he chose to come back home as his heart belongs to the native land. In Nagaland, he started off right here with Eastern Mirror where he was a part of the creative and publication sections for four consecutive years.  But he went on to create his own trademark and his works are more often known as Spearhead Designs. When asked how this catchy name came about, he was quick to say that his brother and friend Niu suggested he should have some name to identify with his works. And of course, he wanted an indigenous name that could set apart the works that he undertakes. He particularly likes the word ‘Spearhead’ because it fits in well with our context. In the process of his career as a graphic designer, he has undertaken quite a number of noteworthy projects. His is a familiar name in print when it comes to designing. His most recent works include the design for the Nagaland Government calendar this year as well as the calendar for the year 2006. He also did the set design for the Prodigal Son which was staged at the end of year 2008 as well as the backdrop design of the National Hornbill Rock Contest. Besides, he created a masterpiece out of the books - 'Windover Collection' and 'Echoes of Spring.' Given the creativity that is in him, it is no wonder that one of the first things that people can think of when it comes to designing is his name. The beautiful traces of his footprints can be found in the covers of Human Development Report, in the brochures for Nagaland Beekeeping Mission and also in the Greeting Cards of many a VIP. This young promising Graphic Designer also loves photography, which he says started off as a hobby and now voices his desire to take it as a part of his work. It is also noteworthy that he developed his interest in art when he was small and loves the fact that his family has been supportive of his dreams right from the start but he credits specially his Mom for instilling in him the greater love for it. He enjoyed sketching and painting when in school and intends to revive it again. He feels that today, there is a demand for designing and photography and expressed his need to have a good team to work with, people he can be comfortable with and also plans to open a Design Studio while also making it known that right now he has only the basics and wants a proper studio where his profession can come fully alive. Otherwise, he is quite happy freelancing from the comfort zone of his home. But of course, the challenge of being in this profession, he says, is also meeting deadlines. And this, because he wants to give his best and not a work that's been done half-heartedly. He loves the thrill and the fun of meeting different clients and finds it interesting that every client has a different perspective to offer. Right now he is purely into printing but he's also interested in animation and plans to expand the designing skills that are already so much a part of him. More multi-colours from this multi-talented youth is surely on the cards. And like all arty minded people, one thing he doesn't quite understand is why there is this constant race to get into the government service and bluntly says 'I don't know why people go after government jobs'. Coming from someone who has successfully made it in his own field that is purely non-governmental, it's also food for thought. As for the creativity instilled in him, it will continue to create waves and weave colours taking a leap higher each time. It won't be too long when we can walk into his design studio if only to get a quick peek of his mastery over graphic designing and, certainly, the future is bright for someone who has set his heart for something as divine as creating a spectrum of visual delight that can take your breath away each time you take a look at it.
